Strategy Statement

The main concept behind my video is to juxtapose the present and the future simultaneously. This I believe will be achieved with cameras set up with the same movement for the two realities. The cutting between the two won't be very jarring to watch due to the fact that they both are taken from the same angles at the same time.

The idea for my 'decay' revolves around a deadly epidemic that wipes out all the humans on the planet. Nature strives again with no human interference, growing on buildings and taking back what was it's originally. The structural deformation and ultimately failing is due to the fact that unkempt plants and vegetation have grown inside the material of the structure, causing it to lose structural stability and ultimately tipping over.

I wanted to show the violence behind this force of nature, so quickly cut montages of the structure breaking is teasing the viewer and making them question the mystery behind the idea.

All of this will be set to emotional tempered music.

Flowgraphs and Tracking

In order to achieve my desired effect for the video, each camera had to be tracked and added to a flowgraph to play sequentially. This is important because it makes the transitions between the two realities seemless.

This trailer portrays the realistic dramas if an epidemic were to arise. It uses documentary shot close ups.

I Am Legend

The aesthetic style of this film is one I wish to employ. Bloom effects, unkempt vegetation, and panning shots.

28 Days Later

This shows the true horror of a post-apocalyptic world. The colours and palettes used are very interesting.

12 Monkeys

Set in a dystopian future, the films theme and style is unique.

The Day After Tomorrow

Another stunning visual film. The special effects used were ahead of that time period.

Concepts Behind My Destruction

Over time unkempt plants will grow on and into the structural elements of the building. Slowly, they expand within the material itself and causes the whole structure to lose its strength and rigidity. Ultimately causing the overhanging levels to fall from the structural pillars. In the sketch I used used colour to demonstrate how nature will overtake and destroy the building.

I believe the test was quite successful. However, I may need to scale back the destruction to only a certain section of the building because of my plan, instead of having the whole building being destructed.

For the main aesthetic of my building 100 years from now, I believe that nature will take back the site, and dominate the structure physically, pushing the structural elements to and beyond its threshold.

Material Research

For this material research exercise I focused on 3 materials that are used in the Sao Paulo Museum. Concrete, Brick, and Glass. Concrete and Brick are both structurally strong and can endure great structural loads, Glass however is quite opposite to this. Brick and Concrete can also last a fairly lengthy period of time without any external forces applied to the load. Glass over time becomes less transparent and glossy. Finally, Brick and Concrete are both good natural blocks for vegetation to grow on and grow into, this is evident today with unkempt vines, and have pieces tear and become less structurally stable.
